SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team wins the Wofford Invitational going a perfect 4-0 on the weekend, defeating Robert Morris and George Mason on Saturday at Hope Field.
Freshman
Kennedy Drafton helped EKU complete the 4-3 comeback, hitting a walk-off single scoring
Madison Scott. Senior
Jasmine Miller hit the game-tying home run to dead center, her second of the day, tying the game at three all.
Fellow freshman
Victoria Byrum (1-0) earns her first collegiate win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings with four strikeouts.
EKU's perfect 4-0 record on the weekend is the program's best start to a season since 2003.
Game 1 | EKU 7, Robert Morris 2
EKU's Scott opened the scoring effort for the Colonels, tying the game at one with a single up the middle.
The Colonels tacked on four runs to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third off doubles from
Jeanay Riley and
Jaelin Haynes, followed by the first homer of the season for Miller.
Freshman two-way player
Maddi Rutan, who entered the game in the fourth inning in relief, struck out two batters in her first two innings of work while only allowing one run.
EKU found two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as
Bella Sanchez brought in Haynes off a sac fly and Scott singled, scoring Miller.
Rutan (2-0) struck out four batters in the final two innings of play, including all three batters in the top of the seventh, to secure the second win of her career.
EKU out-hit RMU 13-7 while striking out eight Colonials.
Game 2 | EKU 4, George Mason 3
Despite EKU's offensive barrage in the first three games of the Wofford Invite, the Colonels were held hitless through the first four innings, allowing George Mason to take a 2-0 lead heading into the home stretch.
EKU would respond in the top of the fifth as freshman
Reese Knox brought in two runs off a fielding error, cutting the Colonel deficit to 3-2.
Miller tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with her second home run of the day to dead center. In EKU's next at-bat, Scott singled and made her way to second base off an errant throw. She was brought home by Drafton, who singled to the right gap to secure the 4-3 come-from-behind win.
Byrum (1-0) earned the win going 3.0 innings with four strikeouts against 11 batters faced.
