Colonels Complete Utah Tech Tournament with 9-7 Win Over Trailblazers

ST. GEORGE, Utah. – After a 0-4 start to the Utah Tech Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, the Eastern Kentucky University softball team concludes play with a 9-7 come-from-behind win over Utah Tech on Monday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.

Freshman Sharyn Duncan was the highlight on Monday, sending a 3-run homer to give EKU (10-4) a 4-3 advantage over Utah Tech.  The home run was the first of her collegiate career.

The Trailblazers stormed back to claim a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth, answered by a 4-run top of the fifth by EKU off hits from Maddi Rutan and Jaelin Haynes.

EKU padded one run in the top of the sixth, moving the Colonels ahead, 9-7, off a Vianna Barron line-out that brought in Maggie Pertee.

Pertee appeared in the lineup while leading off and playing second base, her first appearance of the season in the starting mix.

The Colonels would hold off to secure a 9-7 win as time was called at approximately 3:30 p.m. EST as EKU had a plane to catch back to Richmond.

EKU's Lauren Narvaez (1-0) claimed her first win of the 2024 season in the win, going 2/3 of an inning in relief allowing one hit and no runs.

Over the weekend, EKU scored 18 runs and had three home runs from Duncan, Jasmine Miller, and Jeanay Riley.

EKU's Rutan (5-2), Tayteum Vigansky (2-1), and Victoria Byrum (2-1) suffered their first losses of the season over the weekend, coming in the Saturday and Sunday games against Weber State and Utah State.

EKU returns home to host the Colonel Classic from March 1-3 at Gertrude Hood Field.  Tickets are available for just $5 on the Colonels' website.
