Big Fifth Inning Sends EKU To Series Clinching Win

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Seven runs in the fifth inning fueled Eastern Kentucky University's 17-7 win over Bellarmine in game two of the weekend series on Saturday at Earle Combs Stadium.  The Colonels clinched the series, having won the first game 8-7 on Friday.
 
EKU entered the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 5-3.  After a leadoff walk by Conner Davis, Tait Nunnally tied the game with a home run over the wall in right field, his ninth of the season.  With the bases loaded and one out later in the inning, Mauri Bejarano drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run.  Justin Carinci followed with a 2-run single to left.  Ron Franklin Jr. drove in a run with a single to center.  Davis, in his second at bat of the inning, finished off the scoring with an RBI single through the left side to make it 10-5 in favor of the home team.
 
Nunnally homered again in the seventh, a 2-run shot over the wall in right center to put the Colonels ahead 13-7. 
 
EKU (16-31, 10-13 ASUN) ended the game by run rule in the eighth.  Bejarano hit a 2-run home run with one out.  It was his second of the season.  With runners on second and third, Davis doubled to left center to stretch the margin to 10, 17-7.
 
Nunnally finished 4-for-5 with three runs and five RBIs.  In addition to his two home runs, he also had two doubles.  Davis had a 3-for-5 game with three runs and three RBIs.  Carinci went 3-for-5 with three runs and two driven in.  Elijah Underhill had three hits, two runs and an RBI.  Bejarano was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs.
 
Charlie Rife had two hits in four at bats, scored a run and drove in five for Bellarmine (7-39, 6-17 ASUN).  His 3-run home run in the second inning put the Knights in front 4-3.
 
The series finale on Sunday is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+.  Sunday will be Youth Sports Day with kids 12 and under receiving FREE admission.  There will be prize drawings each inning and a postgame autograph session on the field.  Youth Sports Day tickets are available by clicking here.
