RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team will host West Georgia for its home and United Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET at CG Bank Field at Roy Kidd Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and simulcast on WCYO 100.7 FM, with Greg Stotelmyer, Jim Tirey, and Wes Chandler calling the action.
Saturday's game will be a "Maroon Out" presented by Coca-Cola. The first 2,000 fans to enter Roy Kidd Stadium will receive a free maroon T-shirt.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Colonels (0-2, 0-0) and the Wolves (1-1, 0-1). The 2024 season marks UWG's first year as a Division I institution.
Under head coach
Walt Wells, the Colonels are 15-5 at home.
The Colonels
EKU returns home after two road losses to FBS opponents, including last Saturday's 31-0 defeat against Western Kentucky.
Offensively, the Colonels will look to build on their running game, led by
Joshua Carter and
Brayden Latham. The duo has helped EKU average 158 rushing yards per game. Carter rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries in the most recent game.
Defensively,
Jordon Thomas aims for another strong performance after leading the Colonels last week with nine tackles, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery.
Scouting the Wolves
UWG enters Saturday's contest following a 38-24 loss to Abilene Christian in their UAC debut.
The Wolves are led by first-year head coach Joel Taylor, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at Mercer for four seasons.
One of the key questions for UWG is the status of starting quarterback Davin Wydner, who left last week's game with an injury. If Wydner is unavailable, Quincy Casey is expected to step in. Casey threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns last week, adding another score on the ground.
Regardless of who starts at quarterback, EKU will need to contain UWG wide receiver Dylan Gary, who has 10 receptions for 226 yards and three touchdowns this season.
EKU will look to exploit the Wolves' defense, which has allowed an average of 482 yards per game against two FCS opponents.
