Colonels Move To 7-3 With Win At Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
AG Vandagriff had 13 kills and Josie Schmitendorf recorded 26 digs as the volleyball team moved to 7-3 on the season with a 3-1 victory at Marshall on Tuesday.
 
Sarah Mitchell and Madi Tolzman had 11 kills each.  Mitchell also contributed 14 digs, three aces and two blocks.
 
With the first set tied 10-10, the Colonels scored six straight to seize control.  Vandagriff had three kills during the run.  Her third made it 16-10.  EKU took the opener on a kill from Emilee Hill and a Marshall attack error for a 25-18 win.
 
It was nearly a repeat in the second set.  This time the Colonels were up one, 11-10, before scoring four of the next five to build a cushion.  A kill from Paige Wagers put the visitors ahead 15-11.  Tolzman's ace pushed the margin to five, 19-14.  EKU scored the final three, including back-to-back aces from Hill for a 25-17 victory.
 
The Thundering Herd scored the first three points in the third set and seven of the first 10.  Marshall went up 11-4 on a kill from Brynn Brown and earned a 25-18 win on a block from Megan Taylor.
 
The fourth set was close throughout.  Izzy Collier's kill got Marshall within one, 23-22.  On the next series a kill from Wagers gave the Colonels match-point.  The Thundering Herd scored the next point before Tolzman closed out the set, 25-23, and the match with a kill.
 
Brown had a team-best 10 kills for Marshall (6-4).  The Thundering Herd out-blocked EKU 12-5 led by five from Taylor.
 
The Colonels hit .245 as a team, compared to .140 for Marshall.
 
EKU will play three matches in the Green & White Invitational hosted by Ohio starting Friday.  The Colonels will open up with Oakland at 4:30 p.m.
