Colonels Stage Second Half Comeback From 12 Down, But Lose On Halfcourt Shot At Buzzer

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
EKU overcame a 12-point second half deficit and took a 2-point lead with 3.8 seconds left in the game, but Stetson's Mehki Ellison hit a halfcourt shot at the buzzer for a 67-66 win on Thursday at Baptist Health Arena.

Mayar Wol's steal and layup completed the comeback for the Colonels and tied the game at 62-62 with 1:59 left in the game.  After Jamie Phillips Jr. made a layup with 39 seconds to play, Devontae Blanton did the same on the other end with 28 ticks on the clock.

Phillips missed on a jumper for the Hatters and EKU secured the rebound.  Montavious Myrick was fouled and converted both free throw attempts with 3.8 seconds left.

Blanton and George Kimble III had 16 points each.  Myrick finished with a game-best 13 rebounds and six points.

Ellison finished with a team-high 15 points for Stetson (6-14, 4-3 ASUN).

After Kimble tied the game at 12-12 with a pair of free throws at the 13:08 mark, EKU didn't score again until Jordan Crawford connected on a 3-pointer with 8:30 left in the first half.  The Hatters scored 11 unanswered during that span.

Jumpers from Treyton Thompson and Abramo Canka stretched it to a 15-3 run and handed the visitors a 27-15 lead with 7:29 before intermission.

The Colonels (9-11, 3-4 ASUN) closed to within five, 29-24, on Jackson Holt's 3-pointer with 4:00 to go in the opening stanza.  Stetson shot 50 percent in the first half and led by nine, 37-28, at halftime.

The Hatters methodically added to their lead through the first 13 minutes of the second half, going in front by 12, 58-46, on a jumper from Phillips with 7:15 left to play.

From that point, EKU scored 11 straight.  A layup and 3-pointer from Kimble capped the run and closed it to 58-57 with 4:08 to go.

Stetson shot 52 percent in the second half and 51 percent for the game.  The Colonels hit on just 35 percent from the field and were 7-of-26 (27 percent) from behind the arc.  The home team had a 41-30 rebounding edge and committed four fewer turnovers.

EKU will host Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.  It will be Youth Sports Day, sponsored by Coca-Cola, along with a foam finger giveaway and a postgame autograph session with the team.
