Slow Start Leads To First Conference Loss For EKU

Box Score

FLORENCE, Ala. –
Eastern Kentucky University made just four of its first 25 shot attempts and missed on 11 straight 3-point tries to start the game in an 88-67 loss at North Alabama on Saturday.

The team will make its return to Baptist Health Arena on Thursday against North Florida.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET.

The Colonels scored the first two points of the game, but the Lions scored the next five and never trailed again.  A lay-up from Taye Fields handed the home team a 10-4 lead.  A layup from Corneilous Williams with 14:07 remaining in the opening half pushed the margin to double figures, 20-9.

Cyril Martynov closed the deficit to six, 22-14, with a dunk for EKU with 11:58 on the clock, but the Colonels didn't score for the next 6:07.  North Alabama ran off 13 unanswered.  Canin Jefferson's jumper capped the run and put the Lions ahead 35-14.  George Kimble III put an end to the drought with a reverse layup at the 5:51 mark.

While EKU was starting the game 4-for-25 from the field, UNA made 12-of-20 to begin the contest.

A 10-2 run to end the half sent the Lions to the locker room up 50-29.  The Colonels shot 25 percent (8-for-32) from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, hitting just 1-of-13 from behind the arc.

EKU started the second half shooting much better, hitting eight of its first 13 from the field.  Jackson Holt's 3-pointer with 9:47 left in the game closed what was a 21-point deficit at halftime to 10, 66-56.

However, North Alabama scored the next 10 points to put the game away.

Devontae Blanton led the Colonels (7-8, 1-1 ASUN) with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Jefferson and Will Soucie had 18 points each for the Lions (10-5, 2-0 ASUN).  Williams had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
