Colonels Fall At Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Eastern Kentucky University's men's basketball team lost to Vanderbilt, 92-62, on Wednesday at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.
 
Vandy entered the game ranked No. 26 in this week's Coaches Poll and No. 30 in the AP Poll.
 
MJ Williams answered Vanderbilt's first basket of the game with a 3-pointer from the left wing for an early 3-2 EKU lead.  Montavious Myrick's layup at the 17:02 mark tied it at 5-5, but the Commodores went on an 11-0 run to seize control of the game early.
 
A 3-pointer from Duke Miles capped the Vanderbilt run and put the home team ahead 16-5.  Turner Buttry's baseline jumper with 13:47 left in the first half snapped the EKU scoring drought.  However, the Commodores scored 13 of the next 15 to stretch it to a 24-4 run and a 20-point lead.  Tyler Tanner's 3-pointer with 8:50 to go before intermission staked his team to a 29-9 advantage.
 
Williams hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions late in the first half to draw the Colonels within 15.  He hit the second through contact on the right wing and made the ensuing free throw to close the gap to 42-27 with 2:42 to go in the first stanza.  Vandy led 45-27 at the half.
 
EKU never got closer than 17 in the second half.
 
Williams led the Colonels (1-2) with 20 points.  The freshman hit 6-of-13 from the field and 5-of-10 from 3-point range. 
 
The Commodores (3-0) shot 52% from the field for the game.  Tyler Harris scored a team-best 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks.
 
The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday when they play at Kent State.  The Golden Flashes are ranked 24th in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Top-25.
