RICHMOND, Ky. – Miami University, the No. 4 ranked mid-major team in the nation, snapped Eastern Kentucky University's 2-game winning streaking, knocking off the Colonels 79-69 on Saturday at Baptist Health Arena.
EKU shot just 34% from the field for the game. Miami came into the game with the seventh-best team shooting percentage in the nation (53%) and shot 54% on Saturday. The RedHawks also ranked seventh in the country in scoring at 94.8 points per contest, but were held almost 16 points below their average.
The two teams exchanged runs to start the game. After the Colonels (3-8) scored the first basket, Miami scored eight unanswered. EKU then scored six straight, tying the game at 8-8 on a 3-pointer and free throw from
Turner Buttry.
The RedHawks (10-0) then scored eight of the next 10. A layup from Peter Suder got the run started and gave the visitors the lead for good. Antwone Woolfolk's layup with 9:28 left in the opening half put his squad ahead 16-10.
After
MJ Williams hit a pair of free throws with 5:05 to go before intermission to get EKU within three, 23-20, Miami used another run to pull away. A 13-2 streak from the RedHawks pushed the margin to 11, 33-22. MU led by 10 at the break, 35-25.
EKU shot just 27% from the field in the first half, including 19% from behind the arc (3-for-16). Miami connected on 52% of its first half shots.
Just like the first half, the RedHawks started the second half by scoring eight of the first 10, going in front by 16, 43-27, on a free throw from Evan Ipsaro with 17:21 left to play.
The Colonels didn't get closer than 11 until a late 19-7 run got the deficit to nine. Juan Cranford Jr. hit three 3-pointers to fuel the comeback attempt. His third, from the right wing, made it 69-60 with 4:37 left in the game.
EKU closed to within nine three more times, first on a pair of free throws from
Yvens Paul and then again on a dunk by Paul that made it 73-64 with 1:50 remaining.
Jackson Holt's three from the top of the key with 1:14 on the clock made it 76-67.
Almar Atlason hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to put an end to the comeback bid with 38 seconds to go.
Cranford finished with 18 points.
Montavious Myrick had eight points and 12 rebounds. Paul pulled down 12 boards and scored nine points.
Atlason had a game-best 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field.
EKU out-rebounded Miami 43-32 but turned the ball over five more times. Miami had a 20-6 edge in points off turnovers.
The Colonels will go back out on the road for a game at Jacksonville State on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
