Colonels Stage Second Half Comeback, Beat Queens In Overtime

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University secured its seventh consecutive win in an overtime battle against Queens after overcoming a 14-point deficit.

The Saturday home game was EKU's annual Team Jared event that ended in a final score of 86-80.

Devontae Blanton led the team with 23 points and 10 assists, followed by Mayar Wol who scored 20 points with five 3-pointers.

The Colonels (16-11, 10-4 ASUN) struggled early in the first period by missing several shots and rebounds, which led to the Royals leading 22-8 with around 11 minutes left in the half.

EKU managed to cut the gap to just a 5-point deficit at the end of the first half, in part due to three 3-pointers by Jackson Holt and two by Wol. Queens (16-11, 9-5 ASUN) outrebounded the Colonels 17-13 in the first half, as well as scored 22 points to EKU's four in the paint.

The Royals remained in the lead for the majority of the second half, but a technical on head coach A.W. Hamilton with 12 minutes left in the game seemed to turn the tide for the Colonels.

EKU cut the score to just a three point deficit towards the end of the half on a big time 3-pointer by Wol, and a crucial steal by Holt with less than two and a half minutes to go in the game.

A clutch steal by Jordan Crawford with 1:14 left on the clock led to him tying the game with a layup, 72-72.

Neither team would score for the final minute.

Montavious Myrick made a free throw at the start of the overtime period to pull the Colonels ahead for the first time since the first two minutes of the game.

Blanton scored back-to-back jumpers to pull EKU ahead by five, but the Royals wouldn't stay too far behind. Finally with 35 seconds left, Wol hit a crucial 3-pointer, assisted by a Turner Buttry steal, to put the Colonels up by six points.

EKU went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final 24 seconds.

Leo Colimerio led the Royals with 20 points.

On Tuesday the Colonels return to Baptist Health Arena at 7 p.m. for their final regular season home game against Lipscomb University. The game will be EKU's senior night.
