Late Putback Sends Dolphins Past Colonels

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
A putback with 32.7 seconds left in the game put Eastern Kentucky University down three in a 59-55 loss to Jacksonville on Monday.

The Colonels had erased a 5-point deficit on a Devontae Blanton jumper and a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Mayar Wol, tying it up at 53-53 with 2:07 to play.  Robert McCray V made one of two free throw attempts to break the tie and then EKU missed two at the free throw line.

McCray was forced into a tough 3-point attempt that missed, but Zach Bell rose high above the rim for the offensive rebound and putback in one motion to hand the Dolphins a 3-point lead, 56-53, with 32.7 seconds on the clock.

Blanton's layup with 12 seconds to go drew EKU within one, 56-55 but Jakari Spence made both free throw attempts on the other end to essentially secure the win.

Blanton led all players with 16 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds and two steals.  Montavious Myrick grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds with two assists, two blocks and two points.  Jackson Holt hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.

McCray had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Dolphins (17-12, 11-6 ASUN).

The Colonels (17-13, 11-6 ASUN) struggled shooting the ball, making just 35% from the field and 25% from 3-point range (8-for-32).  Jacksonville didn't shoot much better, hitting on 39% overall and 32% from deep (6-of-19).

EKU took a 4-point lead, 48-44, on two free throws from Jordan Crawford, but JU answered with a 9-0 run.  McCray's 3-pointer with 3:01 left to play put his squad ahead by five, 53-48.

EKU will conclude the regular season at North Florida on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
