ATLANTA, Ga. - Day two of the Buzz Classic looked to be another sweep for the Eastern Kentucky softball team, but a late home run in the seventh inning ended up splitting the results for the Colonels as they took on Belmont and Georgia Tech.
The Colonels (3-1, 0-0 ASUN) cruised to victory against Belmont and were an inning away from picking up a second win over the Yellow Jackets before a last minute surge saw Georgia Tech take the win.
GAME ONE - EKU 5, BEL 2
Tayteum Vigansky (1-0) was first in the circle for the Colonels for her first start of the season. The junior turned in an impressive performance, giving up just two hits while pitching a complete game.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Colonels were first on the board off the bat of a double from
Kennedy Drafton as
Jaelin Haynes crossed home plate off a throwing error by the Bruin center fielder.
Sharyn Duncan added another run with a single to center that brought Drafton home for her first RBI of the season.
An inning later, with two outs on the board,
Jada McLeod took advantage of a bases loaded situation. A single up the middle was good enough to clear all three runners, extending the lead to 5-0.
The Bruins made an attempt to get back into the game with two runs of their own in the sixth inning, but the Colonel defense rose to the task and secured the win.
GAME TWO - EKU 1, GT 2
In round two with the Yellow Jackets,
Maddi Rutan (1-1) got her second start and second complete game of the season from the circle.
The Colonels struck first and early, needing just two batters to put a run on the board. Haynes drew a walk in her at-bat before Drafton followed up with another double to score the first run of the game.
The next five innings saw a defensive slugfest, with neither team conceding a run in the second through sixth innings. However, the Yellow Jackets finally managed signs of life in the final frame with a leadoff home run to tie the ballgame before three singles in four batters brought the walkoff run home.
