Softball Completes Perfect Weekend at Colonel Classic

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University softball team kept the good times rolling with two more wins on Sunday to finish the Colonel Classic with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Colonels (13-5, 0-0 ASUN) completed their sweep of Akron (10-9, 0-0 MAC) and picked up the win in their lone game against Dayton (8-6) on the weekend.

GAME ONE - EKU 4, Akron 0

Victoria Byrum (5-0) continued her great start to the season, picking up her fifth win in a row on the back of a complete game one-hitter. The sophomore racked up a season-high seven strikeouts and allowed just five Zip baserunners in her first shutout of the season.

The Colonel offense got going quickly, opening the scoring with three runs in the third inning.

Kennedy Drafton got things started with an two RBI single through the right side before putting herself in scoring position thanks to a wild pitch. Maddi Rutan capitalized on the situation to tack on another run with an RBI single of her own.

Drafton has reached base at least once in 13-straight games while Rutan has recorded. Both Drafton and Rutan recorded at least one RBI in all five games this weekend.

An insurance run got added to the board in the fourth inning thanks to a Makayla Mathis RBI single, her fifth RBI of the season.

The Colonel defense held firm, downing nine of ten Zips in the final three games to secure the win, in part to a clutch double play from Sharyn Duncan in the sixth inning.

GAME TWO - EKU 5, Dayton 2

Rutan (4-3) made her third appearance of the weekend and put in a good showing with nine strikeouts - her tenth five-plus strikeout game and just one short of her third ten-plus of the season.

Tayteum Vigansky made a relief appearance in the final frame with the bases loaded and allowed just a single run while striking out two for her first save of the season.

Runs came early for the Colonel offense with two in the opening inning. Drafton proved to be the spark plug yet again, opening the scoring with another RBI single before helping Reese Knox reach home by baiting a distraction rundown on a steal attempt.

The Flyers narrowed the lead to one in the third inning before scoring cooled down. After being held scoreless for four innings, the Colonel offense came back alive in the sixth inning with three more runs to push the lead to 5-1.

Rutan picked up her second RBI of the day for the first run before Lilly Davis and Taci Haase put back-to-back runs on the board with a sacrifice groundout and an RBI single, respectively. It was Haase's first RBI of the season.

With a four-run deficit, the Flyers staged a last-ditch surge, loading the bases with just one out before Vigansky came to the circle. Dayton managed one run across the plate in the next at-bat before Vigansky found her groove and struck out the final two Flyers for the save.

UP NEXT

The Colonels will host another round-robin weekend as they welcome Indiana State and Purdue-Fort Wayne to Richmond. The squad opens the weekend on Saturday against PFW at 1:30 PM and ISU at 4 PM.
