EKU Tennis Program Wins Convincingly over Queens

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's and women's tennis programs defeated Queens University on Saturday at a neutral site in Orlando.

Saturday's wins marked the first of the season inside Atlantic Sun Conference action for the Colonels.  The women's team won 6-1 in the morning and the men's team won 5-2 in the late afternoon.

In the women's match, EKU (8-14, 1-2 ASUN) won the doubles point after decisive play on the top two flights.  Only needing one victory due to a win by forfeit on court No. 3 by the Royals, the pairing of Izem Elif Olcer and Ceylin Ipek picked up a 6-2 win over QUC's Jett Coetzee and Zoe Cvitanovic on court No. 2.

In singles, the Colonels won five of the six courts with straight set victories from Ipek, Marilou Cote, and Zhansaya Bakytzhan.  EKU's Sasha Parkhomenko won a three-set come-from-behind battle on court No. 2, taking down Cvitanovic in a super set 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).

In the men's match, EKU (8-13, 1-2 ASUN) opened the match claiming the doubles point off victories from court Nos. 1 and 3.

In singles, the Colonels won on four courts to meet the four-point threshold needed for the clinch.  EKU's Fernando Bulnes, Kartik Parhar, Romeo Elfving Navarro, and Mario Monclus Martin all picked up wins, three of them coming in straight sets.
