HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - A late game surge downed the Eastern Kentucky University softball team on Tuesday evening as they fell to the Northern Kentucky Norse, 2-3.
The Colonels (22-8, 5-0 ASUN) move to 7-3 in their last ten games. The result is just their third in the span decided in regulation full seven innings.
Victoria Byrum (7-1) was in the mound for the Colonels, pitching the full game an tallying eight strikeouts but picking up her first loss of the season.
The Colonels opened the scoring with a run in the opening frame for the fourth straight game as
Maddi Rutan belted a double to center field that scored
Kennedy Drafton.
What followed was a defensive battle with both teams remaining scoreless until the final inning.
Drafton extended the EKU lead in the top of the inning with a solo home run to right field, making it 2-0.
The Norse put together a last minute surge, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the win, walking it off on a two-run home run to left field.

The Colonels return home to Gertrude Hood Field as they host North Alabama in a three game conference series. The series kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday with games at 1 PM and 3:30 PM before concluding on Sunday with a single game at 1 PM.
