Saturday marks EKU's first game against Marshall since 2020 which marked the very first game of the Walt Wells era in the COVID-19 altered spring season.

Marshall has won the four previous meetings (2020,2018,1992, 1991) with the last EKU win coming in Huntington with a 15-12 score line going the Colonels' way in 1990.

THE COLONELS

EKU heads to Huntington with a 1-1 record after winning last week's home opener against Houston Christian, 20-10.

In the win, the Colonels' defense dominated scoring its second touchdown of the season thanks to a 75-yard scoop-and-score by Derek Taylor while holding the Huskies to just 42 yards of rushing.

Through two games, the Colonel's defense has claimed seven turnovers, the third best mark at the FCS level this season.

As a team, the Colonels have capitalized by scoring 27 points off those turnovers.

A win on Saturday would mark the second win against an FBS opponent under head coach Walt Wells with the first coming in 2022 in a 7 overtime 59-57 win over Bowling Green State on the road.

SCOUTING THE HERD

Marshall welcomes EKU on Saturday with an 0-2 record on the season most recently coming off a 21-20 loss to Missouri State last Saturday.

The Herd's offense is led by running back Justin Williams-Thomas who leads the team with 7.6 yards per carry.

Through two games against Georgia and Missouri State, all three of the Herds' primary running backs of Williams-Thomas, Joshon Barbie, and Zion Turner average four yards per carry or better.

On defense, Kerion Martin leads the Herd with 18 total tackles including two tackles for loss and one sack.

As a unit UM's defense has allowed 481 yards of total offense per game.

2025 is the first season for head coach Tony Gibson, prior to being the head coach at UM, Gibson was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at N.C. State where he spent the last six seasons.
