After Falling Behind Early, EKU Wins Three Straight Sets To Take ASUN Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University's volleyball team dropped the first set, but then won the next three to open Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 3-1 victory at Bellarmine on Friday.
 
The Colonels (9-4, 1-0 ASUN) will host its first conference match of the season on Sunday at noon against Florida Gulf Coast.  Macatude Food Truck will be on site for Sunday's match.  The first 50 customers will receive a FREE 12-ounce Dirty Soda.
 
EKU won Friday's match by scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17.
 
The Colonels jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first set, but the Knights answered.  A 12-4 run turned that 6-point deficit into a 2-point lead.  Bellarmine led the rest of the way.
 
EKU had a 7-5 lead in the second set before creating some separation with a 10-3 run.  The final four points came off a kill from Carson Ledford and three straight attack errors by the Knights, handing the visitors a 17-8 lead.  Madi Tolzman's kill made it 22-11.  Another attack error from Bellarmine ended the set and tied the match.
 
In the pivotal third set, BU went in front 18-17 on an EKU attack error.  The Colonels seized control of the set, and the match, by scoring six unanswered.  Amanda Mack put her squad ahead 23-18.  Cassidy Trahan's ace gave the set to the Colonels, 25-20.
 
Bellarmine scored the first point of the fourth set, but EKU scored the next four and led the rest of the way.  An ace from Addison Burke put the Colonels on top 10-5.  A kill by AG Hynes made it 19-12.  Mack's kill ended the set, and the match.
 
Mack finished a team-best 12 kills.  Hynes had 11 kills and two errors in 23 attempts for a .391 attack percentage.  Caitlyn Flees had five blocks and Trahan finished with 14 digs.
 
Mya White contributed a match-best 16 kills for the Knights (6-7, 0-1 ASUN).
 
The Colonels held Bellarmine to a .094 attack percentage and had an 8-7 edge in blocks.  The Knights had one more kill but made seven more errors.
