RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University lost to Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2, on Sunday at the Olympic Sports Training Center.
The Eagles won by scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-10.
The trio of
Addison Burke, Emily Hill and
AG Hynes led EKU (9-5, 1-1 ASUN). Burke had 18 kills and 12 digs. Hill recorded a triple-double with 17 kills, 29 assists and 21 digs. She also hit .438 for the match. Hynes contributed 16 kills and three blocks.
With the match tied 1-1 and the third set tied 17-17, Hill registered a kill to give EKU a 1-point advantage. However, the Eagles closed the set on an 8-2 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Colonels scored the first three points in the fourth set and led the entire way.
Carson Ledford made it 13-9 with a kill. Burke's kill pushed the lead to 17-11. Burke ended the set with a kill to tie the match 2-2.
Just as quickly as EKU had seized momentum, Florida Gulf Coast (6-5, 1-0 ASUN) took it right back to start the fifth set. The Eagles scored seven of the first eight points, taking a 7-1 lead on a kill from Ava Smith. The Colonels battled back to within two, drawing to 9-7 on back-to-back kills from Hill. A service error handed FGCU a 3-point lead and the visitors cruised to a 5-point win.
Barbara Koehler had a team-best 15 kills for the Eagles. Abby Toeniskoetter had nine blocks and five kills.
Florida Gulf Coast hit .289 for the match and committed only 17 attack errors. The Eagles also had a 12-6 advantage in blocks and a 7-3 edge in aces. EKU committed 28 errors and posted a .236 attack percentage.
The Colonels will take to the road for a pair of matches next weekend at Austin Peay on Friday and at Lipscomb on Saturday.
