EKU Seeks Third Consecutive Win Over Longtime Rival

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team continues its stretch against ranked opponents Saturday when the Colonels visit No. 7 Austin Peay at Fortera Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with Barry Gresham and Ethan Schmidt calling the action. Saturday marks the 58th meeting between the longtime rivals and EKU's fourth consecutive game against a ranked FCS opponent.

Fans can also listen on the EKU Sports Network through the Colonels All-Access page, with Wes Chandler and Michael Watkins calling the action. The Kentucky 811 Pregame Show begins one hour before kickoff.

Those making the trip to Clarksville can purchase single game tickets online here.

Eastern Kentucky enters the matchup at 3-6 overall and 2-2 in United Athletic Conference play after twice taking a second-half lead at No. 1 Tarleton State last Saturday. The Colonels led with less than two minutes remaining before the Texans scored the deciding touchdown in a 28-24 contest.

Junior running back Brady Hensley rushed for 139 yards and a career-high two touchdowns, including a 63-yard scoring run and a 2-yard score that gave EKU a 24-21 advantage with 3:18 remaining.

Senior quarterback Myles Burkett made his first appearance of the season, entering in the second quarter and completing 11 of 17 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Jayden West added two catches for 105 yards as EKU finished with 474 yards of offense.

The Colonels also generated three takeaways, turning those opportunities into 17 points.

Senior defensive back Derek Taylor led EKU with 13 tackles, while junior linebacker Kaden Smith recorded eight tackles and an interception. Senior defensive back Jeffrey Kinley added an interception, his third straight game with a takeaway, forcing a fourth-quarter fumble that set up EKU's final touchdown drive.

Saturday provides another opportunity for the Colonels to add to their success against ranked competition. EKU defeated No. 23 West Florida 16-13 on Oct. 24 before traveling to Tarleton State last weekend.

The Colonels are one of just six schools in the FCS to play four consecutive ranked opponents this season, a list that includes Murray State, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, and North Dakota.

Eastern Kentucky holds a 49-8 advantage in the all-time series with Austin Peay and has won the last two meetings. The Colonels earned a 30-27 overtime victory in their most recent trip to Clarksville in 2024 before defeating the Governors 34-20 in Richmond last season. Two of the teams' last three meetings have gone to overtime, including Austin Peay's 33-30 victory in 2023.

In last season's meeting, Eastern Kentucky held Austin Peay scoreless after halftime, overcoming a 20-17 deficit with 17 unanswered points. Governors quarterback Chris Parson accounted for 359 yards of offense, but the Colonels kept Austin Peay off the scoreboard over the final two quarters to secure the victory.

Following Saturday's game, EKU returns to CG Bank Field at Roy Kidd Stadium to host Central Arkansas on Nov. 14 for Senior Day and Salute to Service. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+. Tickets for EKU's Salute to Service and Senior Day game can be found online here.
