Late-Inning Surge Lifts EKU Past UTSA in Puerto Vallarta

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — The Eastern Kentucky University softball team rallied together four runs in the sixth inning to defeat UTSA 7-4, improving to 4-5 on the season.

UTSA took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth before EKU surged ahead for good.

Jada McLeod led the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Bayle Hunnicutt started in the circle for the Colonels, tossing five innings and throwing 104 pitches to keep EKU within striking distance. Tayteum Vigansky closed out the final two innings, allowing no hits or runs to earn the win.

EKU got on the board in the second inning. After singles by McLeod and Taci Haase and a walk to Kennedy Drafton loaded the bases, Jocelyn Owen was hit by a pitch to bring in Skyler Billips and give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

The Colonels extended their lead in the third. Jordan Smith was hit by a pitch, and Makayla Mathis singled and later stole second to move into scoring position. McLeod drove in a run with a groundout, and Billips followed with an RBI single to right field, making it 3-0.

UTSA answered in the fourth when Samantha Mundine singled and stole second before Makayla Madrid delivered an RBI double down the right-field line to cut the EKU lead to 3-1.

The Roadrunners put together a big inning in the fifth, stringing together three singles, a walk, and a two-RBI base hit to take a 4-3 lead. EKU turned a clutch double play with the bases loaded to limit the damage.

Vigansky entered in the sixth and kept UTSA off the board the rest of the way.

In the bottom of the sixth, Drafton was hit by a pitch, and Jaelin Haynes doubled to put runners on second and third. Lilly Davis tied the game with an RBI groundout, and Haynes scored on a wild pitch to give the Colonels a 5-4 lead. Smith worked a walk, Mathis was hit by a pitch, and both advanced on another wild pitch before McLeod capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle for a 7-4 advantage.

McLeod caught a foul ball at the fence for the final out to seal the comeback victory.
