Colonels Out-Hit Louisville, But Come Up One Run Short

Box Score (pdf)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University out-hit Louisville 9-8, but the Colonels fell 6-5 on the road Wednesday.

After Louisville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Tague Davis's home run, the Colonels responded in the second inning.  Silas Shaffer drove in Khaleel Pratt with a double to left center to tie it.  After a walk, Carson Bittner brought home Shaffer with a single through the left side.

The Cardinals came right back in the bottom half of the second.  A one-out single through the left side by Jimmy Nugent plated two runners to put his team back on top, 3-2.

The back-and-forth continued in the third.  Jay Douglas tied it with a single to right center, scoring Dylan Littlefield.  With runners at the corners, Shaffer's ground ball to short was enough to bring home Douglas and make it 4-3 in favor of the visitors.

Jax Hisle dropped one into right center in the bottom of the third, just out of the reach of Douglas with two outs and runners on second and third.  Both came home to swing the lead back to the Cardinals, 5-4.

Nugent gave Louisville a 2-run cushion with a run scoring double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth.  EKU closed back to within one a sacrifice fly from David Alvarez in the seventh.

Douglas went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Shaffer finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Cooper Pumphrey, Caleb Freeman and Addison Stockham all pitched one scoreless inning of relief.

Nugent finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Hisle scored twice, drove in two and had a 2-for-3 game.

The Colonels will play a 3-game series at Tulane starting Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
