Late 3-Pointer Sinks Colonels In Regular Season Finale

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Two free throws from freshman MJ Williams gave Eastern Kentucky University a 2-point lead with two minutes left, but Grant Asman hit a 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds on the clock to give Lipscomb an 80-77 victory on Saturday at Baptist Health Arena.

No. 7 seed EKU will play No. 10 seed Stetson in the first round of the 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET at UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

After Williams handed the Colonels a late 2-point lead, neither team scored until Charlie Williams made a layup with 53 seconds remaining to tie the game.  MJ Williams missed on a layup on the other end and the Bisons ran the clock down as far as they could before Asman nailed one from the right corner.

Austin Ball got a good look at a game-tying triple from the right wing but the shot missed.

MJ Williams led all players with 22 points, hitting 6-of-12 from 3-point range.  He also had eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal.  Jaeln Cooper contributed 17 points and 15 rebounds for EKU.

The Colonels shot 42% from the field and 42% (15-for-36) from 3-point range.  Lipscomb shot 43% from the field and went 14-for-42 (33%) from behind the arc.  EKU had a 42-37 advantage in rebounds but turned the ball eight more times (13-5).

EKU jumped out to a 10-4 lead on a pair of free throws from Cooper.  Ball's 3-pointer from the right wing gave the home team a 7-point advantage, 18-11, with 13:12 on the clock.  Lipscomb scored the next 10 to take a 21-18 lead.

Seven straight from the Colonels, capped by a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Williams put EKU back in front 27-23 with 5:56 to go before the break.  A layup from Ball handed his team a 4-point edge, 38-34, however the Bisons scored eight of the final 11 to end the half.  Two free throws from Montavious Myrick, with 11 seconds remaining in the opening period, sent the Colonels to the locker room down just one, 42-41.

Six straight from Lipscomb early in the second half gave the visitors a 50-46 edge with 17:01 left in the game.  Asman's layup at the 14:16 mark kept the margin at four, 58-54 but back-to-back 3-pointers from Ball and Jackson Holt erased the deficit and had the Colonels in front by two, 60-58.
