RICHMOND, Ky. — The Eastern Kentucky University softball team improved to 2-0 at home this season with a 9-3 victory over Bradley on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels (6-9) put on an offensive show, scoring four runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth to pull away.
Jada McLeod led EKU, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. She now leads the Colonels with 12 RBIs this season.
Victoria Byrum earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing three hits while striking out five.
Tayteum Vigansky closed out the game, not allowing a hit over the final two innings to secure the win for EKU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonels broke things open with a four-run frame in the third inning.
Reese Knox sparked the rally with a single to center and stole second.
Kennedy Drafton followed with a single to center, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
Jaelin Haynes drove in the first run of the inning with a single up the middle, scoring Knox.
McLeod then doubled to left-center, driving in Drafton and Haynes to extend the lead to 3-0.
Later in the inning,
Jordan Smith added an infield RBI single, scoring McLeod for a 4-0 EKU lead.
In the fourth inning, the Colonels tacked on another run.
Knox came around to score after
Makayla Mathis was hit by a pitch, making it 5-0 Colonels.
The Braves replied in the top of the fifth when Kierston McCoy homered to deep left field, bringing home two runs.
From there, however, it was all EKU.
The Colonels answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly that scored pinch runner
Kaitlyn Wallis.
The Colonels put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to extend the lead to 9-3.
McLeod started the rally with a double to right-center. Mathis followed with a double to left-center, moving McLeod to third.
After Smith was hit by a pitch, McLeod scored to extend the Colonels' lead.
Claire Schreiner added another run with an RBI fielder's choice to shortstop, allowing Mathis to score and push the lead to 8-3.
Taci Haase capped the inning with an RBI single through the left side, bringing home Smith for EKU's ninth run and sealing the 9-3 win.
