EKU Powers Past Lipscomb for Saturday Sweep

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Eastern Kentucky University softball team went perfect on Saturday, sweeping Lipscomb in a doubleheader.
 
The Colonels powered past the Bisons with a strong offensive showing in game one, winning 10-3, before closing out the day with timely defensive stops in a 4-0 shutout in game two.
 
GAME ONE - EKU 10, LIPSCOMB 3
 
EKU struck first with a three-run inning in the top of the second. The rally began with singles from Jada McLeod and Jaelin Haynes before a throwing error by the Bisons allowed McLeod to score. The Colonels added another run after a fielding error off a Riley Oleksik hit brought Jordan Smith and Haynes home, making it 3-0.
 
In the top of the third, EKU added two more runs. McLeod singled and Haynes doubled to put runners in scoring position. Another Lipscomb throwing error allowed McLeod to score, and Haynes capped the inning by stealing home to extend the lead to 5-0.
 
Lipscomb chipped away in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run on a groundout and another on a single to cut the deficit to 5-2.
 
EKU responded in the top of the sixth. Kennedy Drafton delivered an RBI double to score Reese Knox, and Lilly Davis followed with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Drafton, pushing the lead to 7-2.
 
The Colonels came up with their biggest defensive stop in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Bayle Hunnicutt entered in relief. Lipscomb scored once on a walk, but Hunnicutt struck out the final batter to strand three runners.
 
EKU sealed the game in the top of the seventh when pinch-hitter Sharyn Duncan delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Makayla Mathis and Knox.
 
The Colonels retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 10-3 win.
 
GAME TWO - EKU 4, LIPSCOMB 0
 
The second game was a defensive battle early, with EKU making key stops through the first three innings. Lipscomb put runners on third base in each of the first three frames, but the Colonels held firm and stranded every runner.
 
EKU broke through in the top of the fourth. Davis drew a walk, and Kaitlyn Wallis entered as a pinch runner. Wallis advanced to third before Duncan lifted a sacrifice fly to bring her home. Skyler Billips followed with her second career home run, a two-run shot on a 0-0 count, to give EKU a 3-0 lead.
 
In the top of the sixth, Haynes doubled and moved to third on a groundout. Duncan added another sacrifice fly to score Haynes and extend the lead to 4-0.
 
Lipscomb threatened in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third, but EKU recorded a fielder's choice at home to prevent a run. With the bases loaded, the Colonels made their biggest defensive stand of the game, forcing a lineout to strand three runners.
 
EKU closed out the game to complete the 4-0 shutout and secure the series victory.

The Colonels will look to complete the series sweep against Lipscomb on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
