RICHMOND, Ky. — The Eastern Kentucky University softball team split a pair of games Friday, earning a dominant win over IU Indy before dropping a close contest to Miami (Oh).
The Colonels (8-11) put on an offensive clinic against the Jaguars, hitting five home runs and driving in 12 runs in just five innings.
Lilly Davis had a standout performance in Game 1 for the Colonels, going 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and two home runs.
It was a combined effort in the circle, as
Bayle Hunnicutt started and allowed just three hits and one run in two innings before
Victoria Byrum finished the game with three hitless innings.
GAME ONE — EKU 12, IU INDY 1
IU Indy started the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first inning, giving the Jaguars their lone run of the game.
The Colonels wasted no time responding with a three-run bottom of the first inning.
The rally began with a sacrifice fly from Davis that brought home
Reese Knox. A wild pitch from the Jaguars then allowed
Jaelin Haynes to score, making it 2-1.
Jordan Smith capped the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored
Makayla Mathis.
EKU added to the lead in the second inning when
Skyler Billips hit her first collegiate home run to deep left field, making it 4-1.
After a single by
Kennedy Drafton and a throwing error by the Jaguars, three Colonels crossed the plate to extend the lead to 7-1.
The very next at-bat, Davis homered to deep center for her first home run of the day, giving the Colonels their fifth run of the inning.
EKU delivered the final blow in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four more runs to seal the win.
The inning began with a two-run home run from Drafton to deep right, marking her third homer of the season.
Five pitches later, Davis homered to deep left for her second home run of the day.
The Colonels closed out the game with their fifth home run when
Sharyn Duncan hit a shot to deep left, securing the 12-1 victory.
GAME TWO — EKU 2, MIAMI (OH) 3
The RedHawks struck early, bringing three runners home in the opening inning.
Miami loaded the bases and was hit by a pitch twice before drawing a walk, bringing in three runs to make it 3-0.
EKU made a pitching change at the end of the inning, with Byrum entering the circle.
In the bottom of the first, EKU responded with one run. Haynes doubled to left, sending Knox to third, before Drafton lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Knox.
After six scoreless innings, the Colonels trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Haynes walked, then Davis singled to bring home Haynes. The rally fell just short, however, as the RedHawks secured the 3-2 win.
EKU had chances to take the lead with the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, but was unable to capitalize.
