Colonels Defeat IU Indy 9-3, in Lightning Shortened Game

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Eastern Kentucky University softball team defeated IU Indy, 9-3, in a game that was called due to lightning after six innings.

The Colonels improved to 10-11 overall and 6-2 at Gertrude Hood Field.

Victoria Byrum (3-5) earned the win, throwing 134 pitches and striking out 10.

Lilly Davis drove in three runs for the Colonels.

HOW IT HAPPENED

IU Indy took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run single.

The Colonels responded in the bottom of the inning, bringing in three runners of their own.

Reese Knox singled to the pitcher, and Jada McLeod reached on a fielder's choice before Davis hit a two-run single to left, scoring Knox and McLeod.

Later in the inning, Claire Schreiner doubled, bringing home Riley Oleksik to make it 3-2.

The Jaguars responded, tying the game up in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, EKU took the lead with a two-run frame. Makayla Mathis started the rally with a walk and moved to third after Schreiner laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Jocelyn Owen drove in Mathis with an RBI groundout to give the Colonels a 4-3 lead.

Sharyn Duncan singled and later scored when Jaelin Haynes reached on an error in left, extending EKU's lead to 5-3.

In the fourth, the Colonels stranded a runner on third to keep IU Indy from closing the gap.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, EKU broke the game open with four runs.

Knox walked to start the fifth, and Haynes and Kennedy Drafton reached on consecutive bunt singles to load the bases.

Emily Mariscal delivered a two-run single to left center, scoring Knox and Haynes.

Davis followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Drafton, and Mathis added another sacrifice fly to score Mariscal, pushing the lead to 9-3.

The game was called due to lightning after six innings, giving EKU the win.

NEXT UP

EKU concludes the EKU Invitational on Sunday against Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m.
