Match Decided by Third-Set Tiebreak on Final Court

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's tennis team dropped a tightly contested 4-3 decision to No. 5 seed Florida Gulf Coast in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Wednesday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

With the loss, EKU concludes its season at 12-15 overall.

FGCU (9-13) claimed the early advantage by securing the doubles point with 6-3 victories on courts No. 2 and No. 3.

The Colonels responded in singles, pushing the match to the final court.

First Team All-ASUN selection Fernando Bulnes evened the score at 1-1 with a straight-set victory on court No. 3, defeating FGCU's Jonathan Baron, 6-2, 6-2. The senior from Badajoz, Spain, finished the season with a team-best 12 singles wins.

FGCU regained the lead with a win on court No. 5 before Second Team All-ASUN honoree Nuno Pinheiro tied the match at 2-2. Pinheiro battled back for a three-set victory on court No. 1, defeating Tanner Povey, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, for his eighth win of the season at the top spot.

The teams split the next two completed matches. FGCU picked up a point on court No. 2, while EKU senior Adrian Contreras rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Stavros Hadjivarnava on court No. 6 to even the score at 3-3.

The match came down to court No. 4, where ASUN All-Freshman selection Ilie Cazac forced a decisive third set. Trailing 5-1 in the final set, Cazac mounted a comeback to tie the set at 6-6 and force a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Cazac would find himself level at 5-5 before FGCU's Mika Bunjes pulled away late, winning three of the final four points to secure the match, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), and clinch the 4-3 victory for the Eagles.
