The new Gertrude Hood Field was completed in March 2017 with the opening ceremonies held before a doubleheader against Southern Illinois Edwardsville on April 8.
As part of a widespread improvement to athletic facilities across the Eastern Kentucky campus, the design is intended to blend with the original campus architecture, while creating a modern sports facility, which adds to both the student-athlete and fan experience.
This newly renovated facility serves the local and regional communities. Modern facilities like this attract events such as high school tournaments, club tournaments and camps, bringing many prospective students to EKU’s campus each year.
The transforming renovations include new team dugouts and a climate controlled press box, which will accommodate enhanced radio and video broadcasts. The new Gertrude Hood Field features improved field drainage at the dugouts and enhanced outfield decks ideal for informal gatherings. The newly renovated grandstand features a brick facade and accommodate more than 400 spectators.
More additions are in progress. A new team locker room, indoor hitting facility and coaches offices, along with banners celebrating the accomplishment of former and current Colonel student-athletes, will be added in the coming months. The indoor hitting facility will provide the team with an area to practice during any weather conditions.
“Our new facility is a game changer,” EKU Softball Head Coach Jane Worthington said. “Not only has it positively impacted our recruiting process, but it also allows us to have more efficient and effective practices. We are fortunate to have the support from President Benson, Director of Athletics Stephen Lochmueller, as well as other administrators. It has been exciting to watch the building proceed and see the final project.”
The project was designed by Murphy, Graves, Trimble, PLLC of Lexington, and the Codell Construction Company of Winchester will oversee the project. Athletic facility renovations and expansions are funded through agency bonds sold in 2015.
