For half a century, Roy Kidd Stadium has been a cornerstone for Eastern Kentucky University and Colonel athletics. The stadium has been host to millions of fans, pivotal games, and a multitude of campus activities. With recent improvements, Roy Kidd Stadium is now better served to meet the needs of EKU's student-athletes, the University and the community.
LED lights were installed at during the summer of 2021, featuring white, maroon, and multi-colored dynamic scenes. The lights are controlled from a touchscreen in the press box.
The artificial surface on Hanger Field, which was originally installed in 2009, was replaced by Vescio's Sports Fields in 2021. The synthetic turf surface includes a slit-film UV resistant polyethylene yarn structure with a sand/crumb rubber infill mixture to provide the best quality playing surface possible.
An expansion project on the east side of the stadium added to the fan experience as it included over 3,000 new bleacher seats, and a concourse that features modern concessions and restroom facilities. A new pedway was constructed from the hill beyond the north end zone that leads onto the concourse level.
The first floor is dedicated to the benefit of Colonel football student-athletes and includes a new team locker room featuring a team lounge, equipment room and a game day training area.
The entire structure, which was designed by Murphy Graves Trimble, PLLC (Lexington, Kentucky) and Rosser International, Inc. (Atlanta, Georgia), was constructed with future expansion and renovations to Roy Kidd Stadium in mind. Construction was completed prior to the start of the 2017 football season.
Athletics facility renovations and expansions are funded through agency bonds sold in April 2015.
