Angelo Mirando was chosen as the Colonels’ offensive coordinator on Jan. 5, 2016.

16184Mirando’s first season was highlighted by the offense putting 60 points on the board as the Colonels tied the school record for points in a game during a 67-30 victory at Austin Peay.  For the season, EKU finished among the top-50 teams in the nation in offensive yards (399.1 ypg) and was 32nd in passing offense at 247.6 yards per game.  Eastern was also among the top-40 teams in the nation in third down conversions.

Eastern’s offense totaled 400 or more yards in a game five times in 2016 and came close to eclipsing that mark on two other occasions, finishing with 398 and 387 yards respectively.  The Colonels strung together three straight games of more than 500 yards of offense.  Mirando’s offensive plan in the first game of the 2016 season allowed the Colonels to roll up 284 yards of offense in the first half at Purdue.

A trio of Eastern Kentucky receivers ranked among the top-15 in the conference in yards per reception under Mirando’s guidance – Dan Crimmins (15.62 ypc), Devin Borders (15.40 ypc) and Ryan Markush (13.58 ypc).

21466In Mirando’s second season as offensive coordinator, quarterback Tim Boyle threw for 2,134 yards, the fifth most ever in one season in program history.  As a team in 2017, EKU led the OVC in passing and completion percentage.  Markush earned All-OVC honors after finishing second in the conference in touchdown receptions and third in receiving yards.  Tight end Dan Paul also picked up all-conference reocognition.  Paul concluded the season with 41 receptions for 407 yards and caught one touchdown pass.  He had more catches and yards than any other tight end in the conference.

Prior to joining the Eastern Kentucky coaching staff, Mirando served as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Coffeyville Community College where he led an offense that averaged 50 points per game in each of the last two seasons.  Earlier in his career, Mirando coached the wide receivers under Dan Mullen at Mississippi State University and also coached under Urban Meyer at the University of Florida.

In 2015, Coffeyville averaged 50.5 points per game, which ranked No. 5 nationally.  In 2014, the Red Ravens were sixth in the nation, averaging 50.4 points per game.

“Angelo is very energetic and recruits at a high level,” Head Coach Mark Elder said.  “He has worked at the highest level of college football in the SEC.  He’s been a very successful coordinator, having produced one of the most prolific offenses in the nation at any level.  Angelo does an outstanding job leading our offense and mentoring our quarterbacks.”

Mirando was the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Ave Maria University during the 2013 season.  He helped Ave Maria to an 8-2 record, its most wins in program history.  The team had been 1-17 before his arrival.

He began his coaching career as the offensive quality control and assistant quarterbacks coach at Florida during the 2008 season.  Under Meyer, the Gators won the Southeastern Conference and National Championships that season.

Mirando then spent three seasons on the staff at Mississippi State, serving as the offensive graduate assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach in 2009 and 2010, and the wide receivers coach in 2011.  He helped the Bulldog offense record the second highest offensive output in program history in 2011.  The wide receivers broke the program record with 19 touchdown catches that season.

In 2008, Mirando earned a bachelor’s of management in marketing from Case Western Reserve University, where he was a three-year letterman as a quarterback.  He received a master’s of teaching from Mississippi State in 2011.
