Mike Springston, who has 10 years of head coaching experience, joined the Eastern Kentucky coaching staff as the offensive coordinator in the spring of 2008.
“Mike and I worked together in the early 1990s at Glenville State College under Rich Rodriguez,” EKU head coach Dean Hood said. “Mike brings a very creative and innovative offensive system that is hard to stop. More importantly than that, he is a good teacher who cares about kids.”
The EKU offense has the potential to be a tough act to stop in 2010 with sophomore quarterback T.J. Pryor leading the way. Pryor took over the signal calling duties midway through the year last season and led the Colonels to a second place finish in the OVC, which included an impressive 36-31 win at conference champion Eastern Illinois.
Springston was the head coach and athletics director at West Virginia Tech from 1999-02 before taking over as head coach at the University of Charleston (W.Va.) for two years. While the head coach at West Virginia Tech, Springston took a program that had won six games in 10 years and developed it into a contender. The 2002 Golden Bears ended their season 6-5 overall and tied for second in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).
After four years at West Virginia Tech, Springston took on a new challenge by revitalizing the Charleston football program. The Golden Eagles had not fielded a football team since 1956, but Springston and his staff put together a competitive squad that earned three victories in 2004.
Springston’s other collegiate coaching stints include offensive coordinator positions at Concord College (1992), Glenville State College (1991) and West Virginia Tech (1990). He also served two years as the head coach at Thornridge High (Dalton, Ill.) in 1994-95 and Linden McKinley High (Columbus, Ohio) in 1985-86.
Most recently, Springston served three years as a special education teacher at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. There, he volunteered his time with the football team for two years.
Springston earned his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia Tech in 1981.
Springston and his wife, Sharon, are the parents of three grown children – Chris Springston (32), Paul Tromp (32) and Lisa Tromp (29).
