Following a four-year basketball career at Eastern Kentucky University, Kirkland Humphrey joined A.W. Hamilton's staff as assistant director of operations in the summer of 2019. In 2020, Humphrey was named coordinator of player development.

In the last two seasons, Humphrey has aided a program that has 38 victories and two straight trips to the conference tournament semifinals. Eastern is now coming off a 22-7 season in 2020-21 which featured the most conference wins in program history (15) and the most conference road victories (8) ever. EKU set a new program record for 3-pointers in a game (20) and led the nations in steals (10.3 per game). The team was ranked as high as No. 12 in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 and concluded the season ranked 25th.

The team’s 22 victories tied for the third most in program history and EKU’s .759 winning percentage was the Colonels’ best since the 1964-65 season (56 years). It was also the highest winning percentage by any NCAA Division I team in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The squad began the 2020-21 season with a 14-2 mark, the best start for an Eastern team in 74 years. Eastern’s 6-1 record in non-conference games was the best non-conference winning percentage since the 1948-49 season (72 years). The seven losses were the fewest in a season since 1964-65 (56 years).

Eastern Kentucky ranked second in the nation in turnovers forced per game, second in turnover margin, second in tempo/pace, eighth in scoring, 10th in 3-pointers made, 15th in assists, 22nd in winning percentage, 46th in scoring margin and 50th in total rebounds.
Humphrey played four years for his hometown Colonels (2015-19) and earned a full scholarship going into his senior season.
He was renowned as the consummate teammate during his career.
Humphrey was also voted the 2018 EKU Homecoming King.
Before committing to play at EKU, Humphrey played under head coach Allen Feldhaus, Jr. at Madison Central High School in Richmond. Â He was a member of the Indians squad that won the KHSAA state title in 2013.
Humphrey's maroon roots run deep. Â His grandfather, Bill Fultz, was an assistant coach at EKU from 1973 to 1975.
Humphrey graduated from EKU with a degree in general business in 2019. Â He is currently pursuing a master's degree in sports administration.
