RICHMOND, Ky. – Over the spring and summer (and now fall), we will be profiling members of the Eastern Kentucky soccer team. Next up: sophomore
Idalys Rea.
Idalys, an physical education major from Houston, Texas, grew up around the Gulf of Mexico, where she developed a love for fishing.
EKUSports: How did you get into fishing?
Idalys Rea: My dad is a big fisherman, so we'd go out when I was younger. We also had a pond by our house. I got started there.
ES: So, you caught a shark in Galveston over the summer?
Idalys and her shark
IR: I did! it was on Father's Day, so we went fishing with my dad because that's what he wanted to do. As we we're heading to the pier I said to my dad and my brother: "today's the day ... I'm going to catch a shark," and they kind of blew it off. We had been fishing for probably an hour or so, and eventually I started reeling in and it was pulling a little more than normal. I was pretty excited. I thought it was just a big fish, but when I started pulling it out of the water, I was like "it's a shark!" My dad thought I was playing around, but when he saw the shark on the pier, he was surprised.
ES: That's incredible. In your time fishing, have you caught anything else cool?
IR: Back when I was in elementary school, my dad entered me into a fishing contest and I won second place. Another time, we went out on a four-hour trip on a boat and I caught a pretty big fish, too!
