RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior Liz Guard tallied a match-high 14 kills and hit .370 to lead the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-17, 30-12, 30-25) sweep of Tennessee Tech Saturday night at McBrayer Arena. With the win, the Colonels earned their second straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season title and secured the top seed in next weekend's OVC tournament.
Junior Jessica Sabath added 14 kills and sophomore Amy Arlinghuas contributed 11 for EKU (22-6, 14-2), who won its seventh consecutive march and extended its home match win streak to 26. Sophomore Brittany Nobilio led Eastern with a match-high 17 digs.
EKU surged to a 9-3 lead in game one on a Sabath kill but TTU (7-22, 3-13) would close to within five at 12-7. The Colonels responded with a 12-5 run, taking their largest lead of the game at 14 before coasting to the 13-point victory.
After trailing early in game two, Eastern took the lead at 4-3 on a Golden Eagle attack error and did not trail again, hitting .571 in the 18-point victory, their largest of the season.
The Colonels grabbed a quick lead in game three but TTU fought back, knotting the score at both 19 and 21. A Guard kill restored Eastern's advantage and a kill from Arlinghaus ended the game, giving EKU its second consecutive OVC title.
The Golden Eagles were led by Anne Morrow who recorded a team best 12 kills.
The Colonels travel to Charleston, Illinois for the OVC Tournament, playing their first match on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Eastern Illinois/Southeast Missouri match.
