Junior Shelly George
RICHMOND, Ky. - Despite double-figure kills from two players, the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team was shutout 3-0 (31-29, 30-17, 30-25) by Belmont tonight in the second game of the Nike Challenge. The Colonels drop to 5-5 while Belmont improves to 9-2. Earlier in the day, Arkansas State topped IUPUI 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-20).

Junior Shelly George led the Colonels with 11 kills, her second 10+ kill game of the season. Senior Jessica Sabath and junior Brittany Nobilio paced the squad in digs, each ending with 17.

Game one was tight from the beginning with neither team holding more than a two-point lead before the Colonels went ahead by four points (18-14) following a Bruin attack error. Eastern equaled its largest lead of the game, 27-20, with a pair of aces from sophomore Bridget Mustard and two kills from junior Amy Arlinghaus.

The Bruins responded with seven unanswered points to knot the score at 27 and two plays later, with the Colonels serving game point, a kill from Belmont's Erin Janson allowed the Bruins to serve the next three points and take the 31-29 victory.

Belmont took its momentum from the win into the second game, never trailing, and doubling the Colonels' point production (16-8) with a kill from Katie Tobiasz. Belmont took a double-digit lead at 25-15 before cruising to the 30-17 win.

The Briuns jumped ahead quickly in game three but Eastern stayed in the game, evening the score at 18 with an Arlinghaus kill. After four more tie scores, Belmont rattled off five consecutive points, highlighted by back-to-back Janson kills, to pull ahead and ended the match with a block from Cat Mundy.

Mundy recorded a game-high 17 kills with a .414 attack percentage.

Eastern Kentucky struggled on the attack, ending the contest with a .146 hitting percentage.

The loss puts an end to the Colonels' 26 game home win streak.

The Colonels face Arkansas State and IUPUI tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 and 6 p.m., respectively
