O'Connor Cracks EKU Top-10 For Digs In A Season In Loss To APSU

Sophomore Abby O'Connor raised her season dig total to 499 to reach EKU's top-10 for digs in a season.

Sophomore libero Abby O'Connor reached the program’s top-10 for digs in a season in a 3-0 loss to Austin Peay Tuesday night at McBrayer Arena. O’Connor raised her season total to 499, which ranks as the 10th most digs in EKU history.

Game scores were 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18.

Stephanie Champine and Kayla Grantham each posted double-doubles for the Lady Govs (19-10, 11-5 OVC). Champine finished with 12 kills, 16 digs, a .379 attack percentage and two blocks. Grantham totaled 10 kills and 10 digs.

Senior Amanda Wilson led the Colonels (6-22, 4-13 OVC) with 12 kills. Senior Bridget Mustard posted seven kills and six blocks.

O’Connor concluded the match with 18 digs. With one match remaining in the season, the Maineville, Ohio native is within reach of seventh place on EKU’s list of most digs in a season. She’ll need 25 digs in the season finale to move up three spots.

A pair of service aces by Sarah Alisaleh to start the match helped APSU build a 4-0 lead to start the first set. Eastern Kentucky tied the score at 8-8 on an Austin Peay attack error and took a 9-8 lead on a kill by Kate Hendle. A kill by Wilson followed by another Lady Gov error left the Colonels in front 15-13. After a kill by Kelsey Rose made it 19-18 in favor of Eastern, Austin Peay scored three straight and never trailed again in the set. A kill by Champine followed by two EKU attack errors ended the first set 25-21.

The second set remained close until the Lady Govs scored six straight to turn a 10-10 tie into a 16-10 lead. Alisaleh posted another ace and Grantham had two kills during the run. The Colonels narrowed the gap to four, 21-17, after a kill by Mustard and an APSU error, but couldn’t get any closer. Back-to-back kills by Grantham and Taylor Skinner ended the set and put the visitors in front 2-0.

The Lady Govs jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set and cruised to the 3-0 victory. A kill by Jessica Mollman made it 11-4. Consecutive kills by Marie Mullins and Skinner pushed the score to 16-9. Grantham’s kill at match-point polished of the set 25-18.

The Colonels will conclude their 2008 season on Saturday when they travel to face rival Morehead State. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
