RICHMOND, Ky. – After a season-opening home court win on Friday, Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will face its first road test on Sunday against Chicago State. Both teams enter the game with 1-0 records. The Lady Colonels knocked out Ohio Valley University 83-53 in their opener. The Cougars edged Northwestern University 76-69.
Tip-off in the Windy City is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
On Friday, EKU hit six of its first seven three-pointers in the second half and limited Ohio Valley to two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 33-point advantage.
Sophomore Nadia Mossong led EKU with a career-high 20 points, tied for a game-high with six assists and was one of three Lady Colonels to grab seven rebounds. Freshman Kayla Drake scored 14 points and came up with four steals in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Cherie White contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
Chicago State trailed by one at halftime against Northwestern, but the Cougars shot 53.6 percent from the field and made 5-of-6 three-pointers in the second half to edge the Wildcats by seven. Senior guard Jasmin Dixon led the team with 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out seven assists. She scored 11 points at the free throw line.
Forward Courtney Waldon finished with 15 points. Laureen Pierson added 14 points and a team-best nine rebounds. CSU held a 44-35 edge on the boards.
Chicago State head coach Angela Jackson welcomes back four starters from last season’s 16-13 squad. Dixon averaged 17.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists a year ago.
