Lady Colonels To Battle No. 12 Vanderbilt In Music City

Eastern Kentucky University’s women’s basketball team will put its season-opening two game winning streak on the line Wednesday night when the Lady Colonels face No. 12 Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Both teams enter the game with 2-0 records. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.  Click here for live stats.

Wednesday’s game will be the fifth meeting between the two schools. The Commodores have won all four, including the three games played in Nashville. The last time the two teams met, on Nov. 9, 2001, Vanderbilt dealt the Lady Colonels a 91-62 loss in the Preseason WNIT.

On Sunday, freshman Kayla Drake made 9-of-10 free throw attempts in the final two minutes and scored 33 points in Eastern Kentucky’s 71-61 win at Chicago State. The Cougars drew within four points with 2:03 left in the game but the Lady Colonels made 13-of-15 free throws to escape with the victory.

Drake made only 9-of-22 shots from the field, but found the bottom of the net on 14 of 16 free throw attempts. The freshman also had a game-high eight rebounds and six steals. Junior Colette Cole finished with 12 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and grabbed seven boards. Cherie White contributed 11 points and five rebounds.

The Lady Colonels went 26-of-30 from the free throw line and out-rebounded Chicago State 40-31.

On Monday, Drake was chosen as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week and the OVC Freshman of the Week.

Vanderbilt has wins over Texas A&M Corpus Christi (85-51) and Western Kentucky (90-72). The Commodores are ranked 12th in the nation in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll and No. 13 in the AP Poll.

Vandy was selected to win the 2008-09 Southeastern Conference championship in the SEC Media Poll. Senior forward Christina Wirth was selected to the Preseason All-SEC First Team. Through two games, Wirth is averaging 17.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Hannah Tuomi is averaging 16.5 points and five rebounds per game.
