EKU Tips Off Legends Classic Saturday

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team begins its four-game stretch in the 2008 Legends Classic tournament Saturday afternoon at Big XII opponent Texas Tech. Game time is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Eastern Kentucky (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening loss to FIU with a convincing 69-44 win over Winston-Salem State Tuesday evening. The Colonel defense held WSSU to just 19 points in the second half as EKU pulled away for the victory. Senior guard Mike Rose moved up to 17th on the Eastern Kentucky all-time scoring list (1,182) thanks to nailing 6-of-8 (75 percent) three-pointers.

Texas Tech (3-0) has scored at least 81 points in all three games including a program-record 167 tallies in a win over East Central University (NCAA Division II) Thursday evening. Ten players finished in double figures led by junior Trevor Cook who scored a career-high 20 points.

Twelve teams are competing in the Legends Classic, hosted at on-campus arenas throughout the country. Texas Tech, Pittsburgh, Washington State and Mississippi State host Regional Round games before going to the New York metropolitan area to face each other for the Legends Classic tournament championship at the Prudential Center. The other participants will advance to play a round-robin series at a campus site over a three-day period.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 1993. EKU and Texas Tech also met in 1960 and 1971. Eastern won the first two meetings before the Red Raiders earned a 93-83 win on Dec. 30, 1993, as part of the All College Tournament held in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Following the game at Texas Tech, Eastern Kentucky returns home on Tuesday, Nov. 25, to host Thiel College (Division III) in game two of the Legends Classic.
