Colonel Softball Takes Two From Appalachian State

KENNESAW, Ga. – Senior Adriel Foxley drove in a school record eight runs as Eastern Kentucky beat Appalachian State 17-9 in six innings today at the K-Club Classic hosted by Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga. The Colonels (2-2) beat the Mountaineers (0-4) twice to earn a third place finish at the K-Club Classic. Shyenne Hussey hit a walk-off bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to give EKU an 11-10 victory.

Foxley and Chanze Patterson earned spots on the all-tournament team.

In the first game, Eastern Kentucky scored in each of the first four innings. The Colonels plated four runs each in the first, third and fourth innings.

After EKU grabbed the early lead, Appalachian State came back and put up six in the top of the second inning to take the lead. Foxley drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the second inning and the Colonels pushed across the tying run on an ASU throwing error.

Michelle Lerner’s two run double in the third broke the tie. Foxley’s single to center field drove in two more to put Eastern up 10-6.

With a 14-9 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, Foxley drove in her record setting seventh and eighth RBIs with a double to center field. Katie Rolf ended the game when she singled through the right side to score Foxley.

Patterson went 4-for-5 and scored three times. Amber Lenz also scored three times. Lerner finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three driven in.

Jenn Bledsoe (1-0) picked up the win after pitching the final three and a third innings.

In the second game, ASU jumped out in front with six runs in the top of the second inning. The Colonels did not score in the first inning, but pushed across four runs in the bottom half of the second and then scored at least one run in each of the final five innings.

Back-to-back doubles in the fourth by Lenz and Foxley tied the score at 6-6. Eastern Kentucky took a brief lead with another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Appalachian State scored twice in the top of the sixth to back on top 8-7.

Pam Webber’s two-run single to right center in the bottom of the sixth capped a three-run inning that sent the Colonels back in front 10-8.

Ashley Gaston tied the game again for the Mountaineers with a two-run single in the seventh.

Foxley led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Freshmen Cassi Gibson and Erin Luther followed with singles to load the bases. Hussey followed with her game winning hit up the middle.

Four Colonels drove in two runs each. Luther finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Lerner went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in.

Kalyn Fox (1-1) pitched the final two innings to earn her first victory of the season.

In both games combined, Foxley went 6-for-7 with three runs scored and 10 RBIs.

EKU will participate in the Chattanooga Challenge next weekend. On Friday, the Colonels will face Iowa State at 9:45 a.m., and Akron at 12 p.m. On Saturday Eastern plays Ball State at 9:45 a.m., and Saint Francis at 4:30 p.m. The Colonels will close out play with a Sunday game against East Tennessee State at 9:45 a.m.
