RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky completed a three-game series sweep of Southeast Missouri State with a pair of 10-2 victories on Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field. Freshman Erin Luther hit two home runs in the first game for the Colonels (13-7, 3-0 OVC), and had the game-ending hit in the second game.
Sophomore Kalyn Fox (4-2) came on in relief in both games and picked up a pair of wins. She also earned the victory on Saturday in the first game of the series.
In game one, Megan McDonald hit a two-out home run over the left-center field fence to stake Southeast Missouri (10-14, 0-3 OVC) to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
In the second inning, EKU platted three runs on five hits. Luther put the Colonels in front with a two-run home run over the left-center field fence. Pam Webber made it a 3-1 game with a run scoring single to left field.
SEMO’s Stacia Dopudja cut the deficit to 3-2 with a single through the left side in the third. EKU’s Cassi Gibson made a diving catch in left-center to end the inning with two runners on.
Another two-run dinger by Luther, this time to right-center field, extended the Colonel lead to 5-2 in the third. After not hitting a home run in Eastern’s first 17 games of the season, Luther hit three homers in the first two games of the series against Southeast Missouri.
Highlighted by a Jena Handley two-run double, EKU put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to build a 9-2 lead. Shyenne Hussey ended the game in the fifth with an RBI single through the right side that scored Chanze Patterson from second base.
Fox picked up the win after pitching three and a third innings of relief. She allowed one run on four hits. Whitney Dupuis (4-4) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits in three innings of work.
Handley finished 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Gibson went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Luther finished game one 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs and four RBIs.
McDonald finished 1-for-2 with a walk for SEMO.
The Redhawks led off game two with back-to-back home runs. Michelle Summers took a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence. Jennifer Vaszuez drove the very next pitch over the fence down the left field line for a 2-0 lead.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Adriel Foxley and Hussey in the bottom of the first tied the game. Foxley singled down the left field line and Hussey drove a pitch down the right field line.
Foxley and Hussey did it again in the second inning. Foxley singled down the right field line to score Katie Rolf and give EKU the lead. Hussey’s single to left-center scored Patterson and made it a 4-2 game.
Eastern Kentucky scored six runs in the sixth to complete a second 10-2 victory. Foxley’s three-run blast to left-center made it 8-2. Luther ended the game with a two-out, two-run double to right field.
Fox earned her second win of the day and her third of the weekend. She pitched five and a third innings of scoreless relief in the second game, allowing two hits and walking two batters. Elaine Fisher took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 14 hits in five and two thirds innings.
Foxley went 3-for-4 in the second game with two runs and five RBIs. Lenz finished with three hits in four at bats and a run scored.
Vasquez went 2-for-3. She recorded two of SEMO’s five hits. The Redhawks only had two hits after the first inning.
The Colonels are scheduled to play again on Tuesday when they travel to Indianapolis to face IUPUI. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
