Rolf's Walk-Off Grand Slam Gives EKU Softball Split With Samford

RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior Katie Rolf hit a walk-off grand slam to give Eastern Kentucky a 7-4 win over Samford in the second game of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Bulldogs (12-18, 4-6 OVC) won the first game by a score of 11-5. The Colonels (17-10, 7-3 OVC) trailed by one and were down to their last out when Rolf hit the first pitch she saw over the left field fence.

In game two, Samford scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. With two outs, Amanda Jordan doubled to right field to score Whitney Terry and Katie England. Jordan then scored on a single to right-center by Kylie Harmon.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Shyenne Hussey drew a walk to get the tying run on base. Erin Luther followed with a single up the middle. After a pop-up, Amber Lenz singled to load the bases. Rolf followed with her game winner, her first homer of the season.

The Bulldogs scored first on an RBI single by Jeslyn Metcalf in the top of the third. A sacrifice fly from Luther and an RBI single by Jena Handley in the bottom of the third gave the lead to the Colonels. Handley’s solo home run in the bottom of the fifth extended the EKU lead to 3-1.

Handley and Lenz each had two hits and each scored a run. Handley had two RBIs. Rolf’s only hit of the game was the grand slam to win it.

Kalyn Fox (5-2) picked up the win after coming on in relief with one out in the top of the seventh. Stacye Toups started and allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out six.

Jordan finished 2-for-3 for Samford with two runs scored and two driven in. Margaret Carter (3-5) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in three and a third innings of work.

The Bulldogs scored early and often in the first game. Aaren Fisher’s three-run home run gave Samford a 3-0 lead after the first half inning. Eastern scored a pair in the bottom of first to draw within one.

A two-run single by England and a two-run home run from Kristy Lawrence contributed to a four-run third inning and a 7-2 Bulldog lead. Samford scored another three runs over the next two innings and carried a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Eastern Kentucky kept the game going by scoring three runs on a Samford error in the bottom half of the fifth. Chanze Patterson’s stolen base in that inning broke the program record for steals in a career. It was the 62nd stolen base of her career.

Amanda Barrs (2-3) earned the win despite allowing five runs on eight hits and walking six batters in four innings. Toups started for Eastern and suffered the loss. She gave up six runs on five hits in only two and a third innings.

Fisher finished 1-for-4 with four RBIs for Samford. Jessica Owens and Metcalf both went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In addition to her record breaking stolen base, Patterson went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Luther finished 3-for-4.

The win was the first ever by Samford in Richmond. The Bulldogs had been 0-6 against the Colonels at Hood Field.

Weather permitting, the two teams will finish off the series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
