HONOLULU, Hawai`i – Eastern Kentucky shutout Idaho State, 8-0, in six innings Saturday at the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament hosted by the University of Hawai`i. The Colonels (10-6) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. Sophomore catcher Jena Handley went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including the single to left center that ended the game early.
Eastern Kentucky led off its half of the first inning with four straight singles that produced the game’s first run. Hawai`i native Shyenne Hussey singled to right center to score Amber Lenz and give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
Idaho State (1-11) came up with three hits in the second inning, but couldn’t turn the hits into runs. ISU only had one more hit in the final four innings.
The Colonels led off the fifth inning with four straight hits as well. Adriel Foxley’s single to center field drove in one and extended the lead to 2-0. Handley’s first two-run single capped the scoring in the fifth and made it a 4-0 game.
In the sixth, Chanze Patterson drove in Pam Webber on a fielder’s choice. Patterson then scored on a single by Lenz. Hussey’s second RBI single gave EKU a 7-0 advantage. Handley, the next batter, brought the game to an end with her single that scored Foxley.
Lenz finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hussey went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Ivy Sessions recorded two of Idaho State’s four hits.
Stacye Toups (4-2) picked up the win after pitching three and a third innings. She walked one batter and struck out two. Jenn Bledsoe finished off the shutout by pitching the final two and two-thirds innings without allowing a hit. She struck out three and walked one.
The Colonels will get a taste of international competition when they play the Netherlands National Team at 11 p.m. (ET) Saturday night.
