MARTIN, Tenn. – Freshman pitcher Stacye Toups tossed her first career complete game shutout to help Eastern Kentucky beat Tennessee-Martin, 1-0, on Sunday. With the win, the Colonels (22-15, 11-7 OVC) completed a three-game sweep of the Skyhawks (16-23, 4-8 OVC).
UT Martin left runners on base in four of the seven innings and stranded two runners three times. Toups (8-5) kept the runners from reaching home. She scattered seven hits, walked one batter and struck out three.
The Colonels pushed across the only run they would need in the fourth. Skyhawk starter Paij Lintz walked a batter and hit another with a pitch as part of loading the bases for EKU. Senior Chanze Patters drew a bases loaded walk to score Jena Handley.
With the go ahead run at second base and two outs in the sixth, Toups struck out Laurie Lindow to end the threat. UTM went down in order in the seventh.
Patterson recorded two of Eastern’s three hits to go along with the game-winning RBI. Lintz struck out eight batters for Tennessee-Martin and the only run she allowed was unearned.
The Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they host Austin Peay for a three-game series at Gertrude Hood Field on the EKU campus. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday’s single game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
