Softball Sweeps Austin Peay In OVC Doubleheader

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky swept a conference doubleheader from Austin Peay Saturday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Colonels (24-15, 13-7 OVC) won the opening game 11-1 in five innings and then earned a 5-2 victory in the second game to stretch their winning streak to five games.

After Austin Peay (9-28, 3-15 OVC) stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first inning of game one, EKU got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Adriel Foxley’s double down the left field line made it 1-0. A pair of Lady Gov errors led to two more runs. Pam Webber’s sacrifice fly capped off the four-run first inning.

Four Colonel errors in the second inning allowed APSU to put one run on board. In the first two innings, the two teams combined for seven errors.

Webber’s single up the middle drove in two more for EKU in the third to extend the lead to 6-1.

In the fourth, Shyenne Hussey drove in Amber Lenz with a single down the right field line. A wild pitch allowed Foxley to cross the plate for an 8-1 Eastern lead. Erin Luther’s single through the left side pushed across Hussey. A throwing error on a ground ball with two outs put the Colonels in front 10-1. Cassi Gibson’s run scoring single capped the five-run fourth inning.

The Lady Govs failed to score in the fifth and the game ended with an 11-1 EKU victory. Freshman Stacye Toups (9-5) earned the victory after allowing three hits and one unearned run in five innings of work. Ashley Elrod (7-11) suffered the loss. She allowed 11 runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits.

Lenz finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Katie Rolf went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Webber had one hit in two at bats and drove in three runners.

In the first inning of game two, Chanze Patterson scored on a dropped fly ball for an early 1-0 Colonel lead. Patterson added an RBI single in the second to make it a 2-0 game.

Austin Peay had four hits in the third, but could only plate one run. Beth Carr’s single through the left side cut the deficit in half. EKU got the run back in the fourth when Webber scored on Foxley’s single up the middle. Eastern left the bases loaded.

Webber extended the lead to 4-1 in the fifth with an RBI single through the left side. Austin Peay closed the gap back to two in the sixth. Daniella Hooper drove in a run for the Lady Govs with a single to center field.

Rolf capped the scoring and set the final score at 5-2 with a two-out RBI double to right center in the bottom of the sixth. APSU brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Kalyn Fox struck out Tiffany Smith to end the game.

The bottom four hitters in the Colonel line-up combined to go 6-for-12 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Luther finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Webber went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Fox (6-3) went the distance for Eastern Kentucky. The junior scattered eight hits and struck out one.
