Softball Falls At Kentucky, 4-2

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky fell to the University of Kentucky, 4-2, Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex. The Colonels (25-16) overcame a two-run deficit to tie the game but the Wildcats (17-31) scored once each in the fourth and fifth innings to pull out the win.

Freshman Amber Lenz went 1-for-3 and drove in EKU’s two runs. Ashley Dimkich finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for UK. Megan Yocke had one hit in two at bats and two RBIs for the Wildcats.

UK threatened to score in the bottom of the first. Molly Johnson’s single through the left side put runners at first and second with two outs. However, EKU starter Kalyn Fox induced Meagan Aull into a deep fly ball to end the inning.

The Wildcats manufactured the game’s first run in the second inning. Dimkich led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Annie Rowlands drove in Dimkich when she beat out a ground ball to the shortstop. Two batters later, Yocke made it a 2-0 game with a single up the middle.

Eastern got its first base runner when Cassi Gibson drew a two-out walk in the third inning. After Chanze Patterson reached on a Kentucky fielding error, Lenz tied the game with a doubled down the left field line. Lenz was thrown out at third trying to leg out a triple.

Yocke drove in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to put the Wildcats back in front, 3-2. UK doubled its lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Dimkich.

Eastern Kentucky brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh but UK center fielder Aull made a falling-down catch near the wall on a drive by Katie Rolf.

Amber Matousek (11-16) went the distance for UK. She allowed only two hits and struck out five batters. Chelsea Butler (1-1) suffered the loss. She allowed two runs on four hits in two and two thirds innings of relief work. Jodi Pence pitched the final one and two thirds innings without allowing a hit or a run.

The Colonels return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Cookeville, Tenn., to face defending OVC champion Tennessee Tech. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. ET. Sunday’s single game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET start too.
