Softball Splits Doubleheader At Tech

Sunday's Game Moved To 11 a.m.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team scored a run in the top of the seventh to pull out a 2-1 victory in the first game of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Tennessee Tech today in Cookeville, Tenn. The second game went into extra innings with the Colonels (26-17, 15-8 OVC) falling, 5-4, to the Golden Eagles (23-29, 7-11 OVC).

After Shyenne Hussey staked Eastern to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI ground out in the first inning of game one, Beth Boden led off the third inning with a home run to tie the game.

Senior Chanze Patterson broke the tie in the top half of the seventh when she drove in Pam Webber with a ground out. The Golden Eagles went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.

Stacye Toups started for Eastern Kentucky and allowed one run on two hits in the first four innings. She walked four and struck out three. Jodi Pence (4-1) pitched the final three innings and earned the win. She allowed just one hit and no walks. Sarah Street (12-16) gave up two runs, none of which were earned, on four hits and three walks.

Hussey and Webber each went 2-for-3.

In the second game, EKU grabbed a 1-0 lead on Hussey’s RBI single in the top of the first inning. Tennessee Tech answered in its half of the first inning. Boden led-off with a home run to tie the game. Two batters later, Stephanie Fischer homered to make it a 2-1 game. Tech would add one more before the end of the inning and led 3-1 after one.

An Amber Lenz RBI single to left-center cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third. The Colonels took a brief lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Adriel Foxley drove in a run with a double and Hussey followed with an RBI single down the left field line. TTU came right back and tied it up in the bottom half of the fifth on Fischer’s second home run of the game.

The game remained tied until Street singled down the left field line with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth to give the Golden Eagles a split.

Fischer finished the second game 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs. Hussey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Eastern Kentucky.

Kalyn Fox (7-4) suffered the loss. She came on with one out in the first and pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits. She walked four and struck out two.

Meghan Maynard (4-2) only pitched one-third of an inning but it was enough to get the win. Maddi Schmissrauter started and tossed seven and two-thirds innings. She allowed four runs, three of which were earned, walked three and struck out five.

The Colonels and Golden Eagles will conclude their series with a single game on Sunday. The game was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., but has been moved to 11 a.m. ET.
