RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team fell to the University of Louisville, 4-2, Wednesday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Cardinals (29-18) scored a pair or runs in the third and fourth innings. The Colonels (26-19) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t get any closer.
Louisville got on the board in the top of the third. After Kristi Cunningham led off the inning with a double, Melissa Roth followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence. A lead off double in the fourth led to two more Cardinal runs. Kaylyn Castillo drove in Brittany York with a single to right-center. Christina Roesel scored on a Cunningham ground out to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Colonels loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but could not push across a run.
EKU scratched the scoring column in the bottom of the seventh. Cassi Gibson singled to center with one out. Katie Rolf followed with her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Stacye Toups (9-6) started for Eastern and allowed two runs on four hits in two innings of work. Junior Kalyn Fox came on in relief and pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Kassie Stanfill (10-6) went the distance for Louisville, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five.
The Colonels will conclude their regular season this weekend with a three-game road series at Eastern Illinois. The doubleheader on Saturday will begin at 2 p.m. ET. Sunday’s single game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
