RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State softball teams will conclude their season series with a single game on Wednesday at Gertrude Hood Field. The two teams split a doubleheader on March 25 in Morehead. The Colonels (19-14, 8-6 OVC) won the first game 2-1. The Eagles (23-7, 8-4 OVC) took the second game by a score of 5-4.

The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Morehead State sits in second place in the Ohio Valley Conference, 3.5 games behind first place Jacksonville State. Eastern Kentucky is in fourth place, one game in front of Southeast Missouri. Only the top six teams advance to the league tournament.

The Colonels were swept over the weekend by the first place Gamecocks. EKU could have easily won two out of three. Eastern was one out away from earning a split in Saturday’s doubleheader when Mary Beth Ledbetter hit a two-run home run to cap a four-run seventh inning for JSU. On Sunday, the Colonels had a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Jacksonville State scored five times and then held on for the 8-7 victory.

Morehead State swept Austin Peay over the weekend, including a pair of five-inning victories. The Eagles scored 27 runs in three games. Sophomore outfielder Ashley Archer was named OVC Player of the Week for her performance against the Lady Govs. Archer entered the weekend series hitting .191 for the season but broke out in a big way by hitting .750 (6-for-8) at the plate. She also drove in a team-high eight runs.

The Eagles’ four conference losses have come to UT Martin, EKU, Samford and Tennessee Tech. MSU plays host to Jacksonville State this coming weekend.

Eastern Kentucky (.324) and Morehead State (.304) are the top two hitting teams in the conference. However, MSU has the best team ERA (1.08) in the league while EKU’s 3.63 team ERA ranks eighth.

Morehead’s Alex Gjevre has a 10-3 record, a 0.88 ERA and 77 strike outs in 95.1 innings of work. Eastern has eight players hitting .307 or better. Shyenne Hussey (.393, 5 HRs, 30 RBIs) leads the team in hitting. Adriel Foxley (.378, 4 HRs, 28 RBIs) is close behind. They have the fourth and sixth best batting averages in the conference.

In the two games against the Eagles earlier this season, the Colonels hit .305 as a team and were led by Erin Luther’s and Katie Rolf’s 4-for-6 performances.
