RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team fell to Morehead State, 4-1, Wednesday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Eagles (24-7, 9-4 OVC) got a complete game three-hitter from Alex Gjevre. The Colonels (19-15, 8-7) dropped their fifth straight.
Gjevre went seven innings, struck out three and walked three on her way to improving to 11-3 on the season.
Morehead State manufactured the game’s first run in the top of the first. After a lead off walk and back-to-back sacrifice bunts, Rebecca Butler singled through the left side to score Bri Jones.
Eastern Kentucky loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning and Amber Lenz tied the score with a bloop-single into center field.
The Eagles went back on top in the second on Allie Honkofsky’s solo home run. They added some security in the third. Butler drove in two more with a single to left-center.
Butler finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Lenz went 2-for-3 with one RBI for EKU.
Stacye Toups (6-5) started for the Colonels. She went two and a third innings and allowed four runs on three hits. Kalyn Fox came on in relief in the third and did not allow a run in the final four and two thirds innings while striking out five batters.
The Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they visit Tennessee-Martin for a three-game set. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. Sunday’s single game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start as well.
